To make sense of all these content options, Samsung Smart TVs are coming to your living room in 2016 with a simpler, more user-friendly approach.
In a recent interview with Samsung Newsroom, Won Jin Lee, Executive Vice President of Visual Display at Samsung Electronics, discussed why the TV experience needs changing and how the Smart Hub interface in the 2016 lineup of Samsung Smart TVs is trying to make television viewing a simply enjoyable experience again.
What’s the background behind Samsung Smart TVs in 2016?
With TVs being connected to the internet you have a lot more choice – so how do you translate all these new concepts within the notion of traditional TV? You want to have all those choices, but at the same time you want to be comfortable. It has to be simple, it has to be easy, you just want to lean back and enjoy the experience.

All these different services (cable, set-top boxes, VOD ) exist today in silos. From the consumer’s perspective, it really doesn’t matter what the source is, you only care about the content what you want to watch. So how do you combine all these experiences into one and change the orientation so it’s really about the content and the user? So we really wanted to fix that problem – how do you get different options offered by different parties to work together to create and cohesive experience for users?

What’s unique about 2016 Samsung Smart TVs?
There are many unique features we’re offering in our Smart Hub experience on Samsung Smart TVs. We can break it down into three pieces: a single experience, a single remote and a single access point. Let’s start with single experience. It really doesn’t matter if content is delivered through a cable operator or OTT provider. The experience should not be different. During the past 12 months we’ve worked with partners from all walks of life really – cable operators, OTT players, game console companies – and we’ve delivered this single experience.

Second is the single remote. If you’re an average TV user, you’ll probably find multiple devices connected to your TV – set-top box, OTT video player, game consoles. But whenever you’re trying to do something, you’re forced to juggle multiple remotes, which is not an ideal experience. So is there a technology solution that can combine all those remotes into one that can give you access to multiple devices through a very simple experience?

Our third point is about access points. You got many controls on your TV set – the controls related to the TV, OTT service and game console – the list goes on. Users should not have to learn how to use all of these devices. It has to be presented in a simple manner so there is one place to go to that gives you control over all of these devices that are connected to your TV set.
