Samsung Hope Library Helps Children in Vietnam Dream

  • Do you remember our story earlier this year on how we helped open libraries in Vietnam to provide students with more opportunities to read and dream about their future? It’s been months since we shared the news, and today we bring a special message from one of the students whose favorite place at her school is this very library.

Please meet Tham, who is cultivating her dream to travel around the world from England to Thailand through reading adventure books at the Hope Library.

Tham is a student at Do Dong middle school in Vietnam’s northern province of Bac Nihn. The school library – supported by Samsung in partnership with international NGO Global Civic Sharing (GCS) – is her favorite place because there are so many things she can learn from the large collection of books and she often tries to use what she learns from reading to make her life more interesting and meaningful.

One of her favorite books is ‘One Thousand and One Nights,’ the story of adventures undertaken by Sinbad the sailor. While reading many fiction books, she dreams of traveling around the world and hopes to become a translator or a travel guide to help foreigners have a better understanding of Vietnam’s culture. Because she knows everyone will fall in love with the grace and beauty of her country when they get to learn more about it.

Most of the students at Do Dong middle school live with their families who live on farming. So during the farming season, the students have difficulties attending classes because they need to help their parents. But thanks to the Hope Library, the students can have opportunities to study on their own even after school is out and they are done with their daily chores. And not surprisingly, Do Dong middle school has risen to second place in academic standards in the region since the library’s opening.

As part of the “Samsung-GCS Hope Library” campaign, we built eight libraries to house 3,000 new books – along with desks, chairs, computers and book-management software. And we plan to build three more next year as we continue exerting efforts to help children in emerging markets read more books and obtain the knowledge that could help improve the quality of their lives.

So, let’s take a look around the Hope Library in Vietnam through the short video clip below.
