Samsung Technology Digitalizes Medical Care, Delivers Innovations

Healthcare is one of the fields where digital technology and computing can bring breakthroughs that benefit many people globally. Information technology can widen the reach of medical care dramatically by introducing new diagnostic techniques and making medical devices more efficient, fast and affordable.

Samsung is also investing and developing medical devices and equipment. Here we see opportunities for our technology leadership and expertise in manufacturing to improve medical practices and innovate.

Today we’d like to share our ideas and provide a glimpse of where we are headed in this new field, by introducing to you some of our flagship medical products.

 

Ultrasound

Samsung Medison, a leading maker of diagnostic ultrasound systems, offers a range of imaging products from portable ultrasound devices to real-time 3D systems. Thanks to these devices we can scan internal organs for signs of disorder and capture live images of a fetus.

Powering the machines is state-of-the-art technology to control noise and enhance image quality, such as live 3D imaging and multi-beam processing – made possible years-long research and technology development.

Samsung Medison’s Accuvix A30 ultrasound system is one of the benchmarks in the segment, providing superior 2D/3D images and easy operations through the 21.5-inch LED monitor.

Digital X-ray

While X-ray has long been used as a common medical tool for diagnosis, today’s digital imaging technology is bringing new improvements both in terms of efficiency and reducing health risks.

Samsung’s XGEO series, unveiled in February, adopts the unique image processing technology and improved radiation detectors to enhance image quality and reduce radiation dose.

XGEO GC80, the flagship model and winner of iF Product Design Award gold medal, also has a “soft handling” feature, which incorporates robot arm technology to help users move tube head unit even with small force.

Other models offer choices for hospitals with limited space or those who want to upgrade their existing analog X-ray equipment. They also come with the remote management system that allows doctors and technicians to manage the machines real-time.

 

Blood testing device

The first product that marked Samsung’s entry into the medical device business is a compact blood analyzer. Samsung’s IVD-A10A, introduced in 2010, weighs only 8.3 kilogram (18.3 lbs) and costs about one tenth of full-size core lab instruments, but is capable of processing the whole blood to analyze enzymes, substrates, proteins and immunoassay.

The most innovative feature of the device is that it can produce results for up to 19 different blood tests in just 12 minutes, without compromising accuracy. It helps small hospitals and clinics in rural areas make timely diagnosis as they no longer need to send blood samples to larger facilities to obtain data, a process that can take 2-3 days.

What makes this possible is the so-called “Lab-on-a-disc” technology and Samsung’s leadership in dealing with nano-scale semiconductors. All you need to do is injecting a small amount of blood into a 4 millimeter-thick and 12 centimeter-wide disc, which has micrometer-scale structures that send blood to different channels for testing.

  2. Also microwaves can be an interesting diagnostic technology instead of X-ray and Ultrasound.
    Here in Sweden, they have started at a smaller local University in Vaesteraas (Västerås) same town as the origin to Asea (the swedish part of the merger of swedish-swiss ABB Corporation) a research project to develop microwave based Mammography.
    Because of screening of Mammography, Sweden have shortage on Radiologists and with microwave as diagnostic research method for Mammography it can be used at ordinary local health center instead of X-ray department of a hospital.
    Mammography screening in local health centers is mush cheaper than screening on a hospital because Radiologists is not needed for the examination it can be done by nurses instead.
